子供の頃によく歌った熊本民謡「おてもやん」と「あんたがたどこさ（Semba）」を世界に通じるエネルギーに満ち溢れたクールなジャズにしたいとアレンジした作品。パリで数年に渡り試行錯誤してようやく完成したスタイル。アルバムタイトルの「Semba」 は、「あんたがたどこさ」の曲中に出てくる地元熊本の地名「船場」。
「Signals From the Lighthouse of Love」は、キャリアを始めて間もない２０歳頃に作曲した作品。作詞を手がけたのは、イギリス人作詞家のクリス・モズデル (Chris Mosdell) 。「あなたとわたし」を意味するフランス語タイトル「Toi Et Moi」は、パリに渡って数年経った頃の作品で、ロマンチックなパリをイメージして初めて作詞も手がけた。その詩をクリス・モズデルが磨き上げて仕上がった作品。「Vis Ta Vie (Live Your Life) 」（「自分の人生を歩んで」の意味）は、作詞作曲を手がけた近年の作品。

Otemoyan – Otemoyan est une chanson de style “minyo”, musique folklorique japonaise, de Kumamoto, la ville natale de Rié. Otemoyan parle de Chimo, une jeune fille de l’ère Meiji, amoureuse d’un homme portant des cicatrices de variole sur le visage. Chimo est vraiment charmée par lui malgré son apparence, mais elle hésite à organiser une cérémonie de mariage traditionnelle en raison des commentaires éventuels des habitants sur l’aspect de son nouveau mari. 

A l’origine, Otemoyan était une chanson jouée pendant des beuveries avec des geishas. Plusieurs hypothèses ont été formulées quant à l’origine du titre de cette chanson. La plus probable d’entre elles est qu’Otemoyan porte le nom d’une dame de Tomonaga qui habitait près de l’actuelle gare de Kumamoto. La plus ancienne référence de cette chanson apparait dans “5 Pairs of Shoes”, un livre publié en 1907 par 5 prometteurs hommes de lettres : Tekkan YOSANO, Mokutaro KINOSHITA (a.k.a. Masao ŌTA), Kitahara HAKUSHI, Hirano BANRI et Yoshii ISAMU, qui visitèrent Kumamoto à ce moment-là. Otemoyan fit véritablement ses débuts avec la chanteuse Akasaka KOUME en 1935. 

Si vous voyagez à Kumamoto en été, vous entendrez Otemoyan joué par des danseurs de masse dansant dans les rues de Kumamoto. Otemoyan est généralement accompagné de shamisen et de tambours taiko, et d’autres percussions ; et chanté avec l’accent Kumamoto du sud. Son auteur-compositeur est Iné NAGATA, professeur de shamisen et de danses japonaises.

Semba (Antagata Dokosa) – Le titre “Semba” est le nom de l’endroit où Rie a grandi au Japon. Il est courant que Semba soit chanté lors de jeux de balle au Japon. Encore aujourd’hui, les enfants chantent cette chanson créée sous l’ère Edo tout en jouant à la balle. 

“Otemoyan” & “Semba (Antagata Dokosa)” que Rié a chanté pendant son enfance, ont ici été transformés en morceaux de jazz énergiques avec une touche unique due à ses années passées à Paris. 

Signals From the Lighthouse of Love  – cette chanson a été compose au début de sa carrière avec le célèbre parolier anglais Chris MOSDELL.

Toi Et Moi – Quelques années après son installation à Paris, Rié a composé ce morceau avec en tête l’image de la ville de l’amour. Chris en a sublimé les paroles.

Vis Ta Vie – C’est une des ses dernières compositions basée sur sa philosophie de vie.

Otemoyan – Otemoyan is a Japanese folk song called “minyo” from Kumamoto, Rié’s hometown. Otemoyan is about Chimo, a young maiden lady in the Meiji period, who is in love with a man with smallpox scars on his face. Chimo is very much charmed by him regardless of his look but hesitates to hold a traditional wedding ceremony due to possible comments made by the townspeople about her new husband’s look.

Originally, Otemoyan was a song played during drinking parties with geishas. Several hypothesis have been formulated as to the origin of the name. The most creditable among them is that Otemoyan was indeed named after a lady from Tominaga who lived near the present Kumamoto Station.  The oldest reference of this song is in “5 Pairs of Shoes”, a book published in 1907 by five promising men of letters : Tekkan Yosano, Mokutaro Kinoshita (pen-name of Masao Ōta), Kitahara Hakushu, Hirano Banri and Yoshii Isamu, who visited Kumamoto at that time. Otemoyan made a debut with the singer Akasaka Koume in 1935.

If you travel to Kumamoto in the summer chance are you will hear Otemoyan played by mass performers dancing in the streets of Kumamoto.  Otemoyan is usually accompanied by shamisen and taiko drums and other percussion ; and sung with Kumamoto accent of south.  The writer and composer is Ine Nagata, a teacher of shamisen and Japanese dances.

Semba  (Antagata Dokosa) – The title “Semba” is the name of the place where Rié grew-up in Japan. It is common for Semba to be sung with a ball game in Japan. Even today children sing this song created during Edo period whilst playing a variety of ball games.

“Otemoyan” & “Semba (Antagata Dokosa)” which Rie sang in her childhood, have been transformed into energetic Jazz songs with unique touch through years of trial in Paris. 

Signals From the Lighthouse of Love – This song was composed at the beginning of her career and famed British lyricist Chris Mosdell wrote its lyrics.  

Toi Et Moi – A few years after moving to Paris Rié composed “Toi Et Moi” (“You & I”) with the image of the city of love. Chris polished its lyrics beautifully.

Vis Ta Vie – One of her recent compositions based on her life philosophy. The title means Live Your Life.
